Alternative Income Initiative
In order not to feel left out of the initiatives, the “Talking Trees Project” and the Kenya Forest Service assisted the Masaai Morans to launch a pilot community Indigenous tree planting project. The main aim of this project was to:
- Educate and raise awareness on alternative sources of income and initiatives through natural resource management.
- Replace lost indigenous tree coverage in an attempt to lure Morans from focusing too much attention on girls for undergoing compulsory FGM/C.
- Reduce land degradation, soil erosion and deforestation by planting more trees through the initiated planting project, as a way to stop environmental degradation, reverse the loss of soil fertility and humidity, enhance availability of food, forage for their animals, fuel and timber resources for their communities
